Weekend champ, or Weekend Chump.
Friday, October 10th, 2008Did anyone try ringing a bookie to place a bet at any stage on Monday morning after the weekends running of the Turnbull Stakes, if you did chances are you would have got an engaged signal or your call diverted to a call centre located somewhere in the Mojave Desert, why. well the answer is quite simple, the phones at the Mercedes and BMW dealerships were ringing of the hook, and if you were one of the lucky few to try and book your next holiday in the Greek Isles, The Bahamas or the South of France, only to find the house full sign has gone up the answer is quite simple really, Our arch enemy, the bookmaker, beat us to it, cashed up to the hilt with our money once again.
Weekend Hussler got sent out at a 1.90 favourite in the Turnbull, all the racecourse smarties, shirt tuggers and people who knew, spriuked this modern day wonder horse as unbeatable and punters as a whole ploughed in with what would seemed to be an unlimited amount of money, and just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the bookies wound him out to even money just to entice any remaining pocket change that you may have had into there bags as well.
Well we all now know the result, which brings our international war on the bookies tally to “bookmaker 3534, Punters Nil.” oh well back to the caravan park this year I guess.
Now since Saturday, Weekend Hussler has been bagged out and critised from many quarters and has gone from superhorse to chaffbandit in a faster time than it took him to run his final 600 in the Maybe Diva, and I,m guessing also from the same self confessed experts that were claiming him to be greater than Kingston Town, Tulloch and maybe even Pharlap combined just a few short days ago. And that brings me to the main point of this website.
Horse racing is full of self confessed experts in everything, loaded to the hilt with sure bets and inside information and all too willing to tell you how great a tipster they are, anyone who has been on a racetrack or visited there local betting agency will know exactly what I mean, this unfortunately is not confined to the track or TAB, internet forums are riddled with these Pitsburg Phil wannabe’s and if you are the type of person who is persuaded by these bringers of doom then you really should think seriously about investing you money elsewhere.
Weekend Hussler appears that he will now go into the Cox plate, although general consensus seems to be that he will first run in the Caulfield Cup as well, Originally I didn’t think that the Caulfield Cup was going to be a serious assignment for him, but the closer we get the more likely it does appear, I guess we shall have to wait until later next week to know for certain.
Personally I hope he doesn’t run at Caulfield but if he does and wins then a lot of people will be left feeling more than a little foolish, if runs and fails then all the shirt tuggers will be back out in force, telling us all we told you so, which by the way is not necassarily a bad thing, this will push his price out in the Cox plate and for the first time this preparation he will start at a backable price.
Anyway back to the point of this website, it has always been the purpose to show average punters that whatever your preferences, you should always put your faith in yourself, by this I mean regardless of what you may hear or read, ultimately the opinion that counts most is yours, dont allow yourself to be swayed by racecourse hype and betting plunges that more often than not end up with us the punter leaving our money in the bag, dont be swayed by wannabe tipping champions that claim to be in the know with inside information and the good mail, because quite honestly it doesn’t really exist as such, do you really think that a stable is going to line up a betting sting, with months of work put in to prepare and then broadcast it to all on internet forums as well as tell your neighbours hairdresser.
Ultimately it is your money that is being put at risk, so therefore it only makes sence that it is your opinion that you should live or lose by.
Back to 7 times Group 1 winner, Weekend Hussler, regardless of what we read or hear in the media or from all the racecaourse smarties, he is an outstanding racehorse, Not a champion in the same vain as Kingston Town, well not at the moment at least, remember even the King was beaten 11 times in his career, but being an outstanding racehorse doesnt make him and outstanding betting proposition, but come Mooney Valley and the Race of Champions, if the odds are in our favour then we may even let him carry some of mine.
Good Luck and Happy punting
